PRESENTATION OUTLINE

problem-solving questions

  • How is n^0=1?
  • Is 0^0=1?

We define 2^0 = 1, so that each power of 2 is one factor of 2 larger than the last.
e.g., 1,2,4,8,16,32...

If we multiply 2^1 by 2, we get 2^2; naturally if we divide 2^1 by 2, we should get 2^0. And it happens that 2^1/2=2/2=1.

In other words, x^0=x^(y-y)=(x^y)/(x^y)=1
