Worry....

  • Worry, like a rocking chair, will give you something to do, but won’t get you anywhere – Vance Havner
  • Ulcers are what you get from climbing mountains over molehills – The Bible Friend
  • Troubles are a lot like people - they grow bigger if you nurse them. - Author Unknown

Worry is the advanced interest you pay on troubles that seldom come – Vance Havner

Matthew 6:25-34

33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.

Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Worry

Getting to the heart of it
Word we get psyche or psychology from

our soul, our heart, the innermost workings of who we are

Worry pierces us to the very core

Can lead to:

emotional paralysis
indecision
anxiousness about what to do
frantic activity
confused thinking
outright fear

Who told you....?

  • To prioritize the physical?
  • You are not "worth it?"
  • Life will last longer?
  • God can't be trusted?
  • Frantic activity is fruitful?
  • God doesn't know anything?
  • The Godly "are losers?"
To prioritze the physical? what we eat, drink, or wear? vs. 25

You are not worth it? vs. 26

Life will last longer if you worry more? vs. 27

God can't be trusted - vs. 26, and vs. 30 - if God cares for plants that are here today and gone tomorrow, he will certainly take care of us, who are eternal

God puts examples of His provision right in front of us

Frantic activity is fruitful - Black Friday is a great example of this principle - run after....to aggressively seek after, chase down

God doesn't know anything - When we believe that God does not provide, we will be as frantic as those who do not believe in God

If we follow God, do what is right before the Lord, and actively seek Him - we will miss out.....somehow....

God doesn't know anything - vs. 32

STOP Worrying

Jesus says
Present imperative

I myself - emphasizing vs. 25, 29 his personal attention to this matter of chronically worrying

implies we have been worrying

to live with a divided mind

to have our energies dissipated thorugh indecision

to be in place physically but our minds are somewhere else

Bird Watching

do some
Bird watching - if you think you do not have enough "stuff stored up" - watch the birds and learn....

Wild flowers

catalogue some wildflowers
a plant in general that has large flowers.....

more specific to the region of the middle east, common wildflowers

you ever look at the beauty in a sunflower......the amazing structure, etc....

more amazing than anything Solomon ever wore......

than anything that ever walked down the fashion runway....

(Illus. ecosystems are great illustrations of interdependence an dindividuality - how God has created systems of life to thrive - unless man has done something to damage that)

the purpose of these two exercises is to build your trust in God

TRUST

build your trust in God
since the essence of worry is a lack of faith in God's ability and willingness to provide

little faith is a way of saying your faith numbers are too small

word used to describe amount

so work on your numbers!!
