All of his explorations were trying to find the Northeast Passage. That is why after they discovered the Northeast Passage, they named a sea after him.

Willem Barentsz was born with the name "Barentsz" but now he is known as "Barents"

The First Exploration

The first exploration was with a ship called the Mercury. His goal was to enter the Kara Sea. He discovered the route through Straits Vaygach.

The Second Exploration

The ships approached the Kara Sea when they realized that the whole sea was frozen, and then they had to turn back.

The Third Exploration

In the third exploration, he reached the northern part of Nova Zembla and thought he had found the Northeast Passage.

But the water froze, so he had to leave the ship and move on to the island. He built a house called the Safe House.

After 8 months, the ice broke his ship. He built a life boat but as they were leaving, he got scurvy and died.

He died from scurvy and all his crew members were very sad. But not all of his men were there. Some of them had gone when he died.
