  • William Harvey was the son of Thomas Harvey, a jurat of Folkestone

CONTRIBUTIONS

  • He developed the first complete theory of the circulation of blood,
  • Harvey's research was furthered through the dissection of animals. He first revealed his findings
  • at the College of Physicians in 1616, and in 1628 he published his theories in a book entitled '
  • 'Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis in Animalibus'
  • where he explained how the heart propelled the blood in a circular course through the body

CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Experimentally, he found valves in the veins,
  • and correctly identified them as restricting the flow of blood in one direction.

CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Harvey was also the first to suggest that humans and other mammals reproduced through the fertilization of an egg by sperm.
  • It took a further two centuries before a mammalian egg was finally observed.

EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

  • He entered the kings school for five years.
  • After he joined Caius College in Cambridge Harvey graduated as a Bachelor of Arts in 1597.
  • He then traveled through France and Germany to Italy, where he entered the University of Padua, in 1599.
  • Harvey graduated as a Doctor of Medicine at the age of 24 from the University of Padua on 25 April 1602.
  • After graduating from Padua, Harvey immediately returned to England where he obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Cambridge that same year.
