  • William Herschel was born on Nov, 15, 1738 And was born in Hannover, Germany.
  • He died Aug, 25, 1822

HERSCHEL'S ASTRONOMICAL FOCUS

  • Herschel, when using his telescope discovered an object moving in the sky
  • He later found that this object was Uranus, the 7th planet from the Sun
  • He also discovered 2500 other celestial objects

HERSCHEL ASTRONOMICAL TIMELINE

  • 1785: Herschel built his 40ft telescope
  • 1787: He discovered two moons around Uranus, Titania and Oberon
  • 1789: He found sixth and seventh moons, Enceladus and Mimas
  • 1800: Performed expirement, found different temps. for different colors
  • Through a prism. Infrared was not visible.

HERSCHEL ASTRONOMICAL TIMELINE (CONT.)

  • 1801: Herschel proposed the name "Asteroids"
  • 1820: Due to his discovery, he was elected vice president of the newly formed
  • 1820: Royal Astronomical Society and elected president the following year
  • Herschel explored the whole Britain sky with his telescope
