"One of America's most famous psychologist"

Personal Life

  •  Was born January 11, 1842 in New York, New York.
  • Son of Henry James Sr. who was a Swedenborgianism  theologian
  • Started medical classes at the Harvard Medical School in 1864
  • Married Alice Gibbins in 1878.
  • Had a son named Henry James born on May 18th, 1879.

Pragmatism- The value of any truth was utterly dependent upon it's use to the person holding it. Famous work: "What Pragmatism Means"
"Truths emerge from facts, but they dip forward into facts again and add to them; which facts again create or reveal new truth (the word is indifferent) and so on indefinitely. The 'facts' themselves meanwhile are not true. They simply are. Truth is the function of the beliefs that start and terminate among them."
Functionalism- The function of mental processes
James-Lange Theory of Emotion- Stimulus, physical reaction then emotion.

Where James Studied.

  • Harvard University, Cambridge, MA.
  • Attended Harvard from 1864-1869
  • Taught at Harvard from 1873-1907
  • Was inspired to start physiology and psychology while in Germany

Why?

  • William James originally was becoming a physician.
  • This was because he wanted to be a physiologist.
  • While in Germany he was inspired and realized his calling was psychology
