PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Comedies
It was difficult to see the difference between Comedies and Romances in most plays. We have a habit to expect a comedy to aim to make us laugh, but, although there are extremely funny passages, it is clear that this is not the main character of any but one or two early plays
Tragedies
A Tragedy must end in some huge catastrophe involving , in Elizabethan practice the death of the principal character
Histories
We may say that in the Histories Shakespeare is dealing with the nation as a hero. The hero in this case is immortal and his tale cannot be a true tragedy; while on the other hand there can never be the true comedy feeling of a happy ending
His career
By 1592, aged 28, Shakespeare was in London and already established as both an actor and a dramatist. He is first mentioned as a man of the theatre by the poet and dramatist Robert Greene, in Greenes, Groats-Worth of Witte published that year. Greene referred to him as an 'upstart crow' who 'is in his own conceit the only Shake-scene in a country'. He was also a poet
Shakespeare's language
Shakespeare used more English words than any other writer. He made up words and expressions too. When someone says quick as a flash, blinking idiot or I haven't slept a wink, you are listening to Shakespeare.
The English language has changed since Shakespeare's time. So he is not always easy to read. But it's worth the effort.
By the time he wrote his last play in 1613, Shakespeare had helped to establish a new grammar and a much wider vocabulary for the early form of modern English.
The royal Shakespeare theatre
The theatre has a arched stage, and a seating capacity of about 1500 people, on three tiers (stalls, circle and balcony, with additional side balconies). Entrance to the balcony is through a separate door. The theatre has several notable Art Deco features, including the staircase and corridors at either side of the auditorium. It is a Grade II* listed building
The globe theatre
The Globe Theatre was a theatre in London associated with William Shakespeare. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, on land owned by Thomas Brend and was destroyed by fire on 29 June 1613. A second Globe Theatre was built on the same site by June 1614 and closed in 1642.
Shakespeare's birthplace
A rambling half-timbered house on Henley Street where, it is believed, Shakespeare was born and spent his childhood years.
William Shakespeare's father, John Shakespeare, moved to Stratford-upon-Avon with his wife Mary in 1529. We know that by 1552 they were resident in Henley Street, so it seems likely that William lived here upon his birth 12 years later. But we do not know for certain.
His family
William Shakespeare had a wife called Anne Hathaway , she was a homemaker.
He also had children called
Susanna Hall was a housewife
Hamnet Shakespeare was a baker
Judith Quiney
John Shakespeare (father)
Mary Shakespeare (mother)
