  • Died: February 14, 1891
  • General in the Union army.

Sherman's family and early life

  • Sherman's Father served on the Ohio Supreme court.
  • His father served until his sudden death.
  • Sherman soon lived with Senator Thomas Ewing.
  • Mr. Ewing appointed him to the U.S. Military academy.
  • Sherman graduated sixth in his class.

military Career

  • He had a spectacular early career.
  • Saw combat at the second seminole war.
  • Resigned his commision in 1853.
  • took work in banking and studied law briefly.
  • 1859, superintendent of lousiana military academy.

Civil war

  • SHerman resigned from the academy.
  • Made colonel of the 13th U.S.
  • Fought at the first battle of manassas.
  • Pres. Lincoln impressed by performance.
  • Promoted to Brigadier general after battle.

Civil war

  • Ranked among seventh among other officers.
  • Send to kentucky to stop from seceeding.
  • moved to st. louis to serve for henry halleck.
  • logistical missions to capture fort donelson.

sherman march

  • Nov. 15 to dec. 21 1864.
  • Led 60,000 soldiers on 285 miles.
  • From atlanta to savannah, georgia.
  • to frighten Georgia civilians.
  • to abandon confederate cause.

atlanta campaign

  • 1864,  fought General johnston and hood.
  • series of battles in north georgia.
  • goal to destroy tennesse army.
  • cut off vital confederate supplies.
  • failed but forced the surrender of atlanta.

Battle of nashville

  • final year for general hood's confederates.
  • 1864, hood abandoned city to william sherman.
  • Hood hoped to draw sherman out of south.
  • enough troops to split sherman's force. 
  • sent part of it to chase hood into tennessee.
