What is a Foreign Policy: A foreign policy is essentially just a governments way of dealing/communicating with other nations.

Opening statement: Opening statement: Woodrow Wilson did not think foreign policy was a big concern during his presidency. He stated "It would be the irony of fate if my administration had to deal chiefly with foreign affairs." He realized the irony in 1913 and refused to take part in the dollar diplomacy the dollar diplomacy. The dollar diplomacy was just a plan to promote stability, mainly in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Cause: When Wilson took office he did not believe that foreign policy was a major issue in the United States. He said "It would be the irony of fate if my administration had to deal chiefly with foreign affairs." He wanted to put his time/effort towards things like a domestic reform agenda. And that somewhat backfired on him.

Effects: The backfire was thanks to the dollar diplomacy plan that he refused to associate himself with. The definition of dollar diplomacy is
the use of a country's financial power to extend its international influence. Which means they want to use their country's power to help other countries out. And Wilson was against that, even though it was pushed on him many times.

The characteristics: Though it was not one of his main concerns to deal with foreign policy when he took office, it ended up being what he spent a decent amount of his time on. Because the two presidents before him believed in making America a worldwide powerhouse, they had pretty much dropped all of these foreign countries issues on his shoulders. At this time it was believed that it was Americas job as a Christian republic, to spread democracy throughout the world. Wilson however stopped caring about this policy and brought a whole new outlook to the White House.

Wilson's outlook: He believed that everyone had the right to something called self determination. That means that every nation should have the power to choose their own government. And that not everybody has to be like America.

Significance: The significance of wilson's plan is that it was a new direction for America, the two presidents before him wanted to spread the American government throughout the world. But Wilson just wanted every nation to decide for themselves what kind of government they wanted.
