Blizzards
blizzards are dangerous winter storms that have a combination of wind and snow and result in low visibilities. blizzards often cause a drop in temperature and heavy snowfall but they are not required.

Sleet
Occurs when snow partially melt in the air and then refreeze before it hits the ground as sleet.

Ice Storm
An ice storm is a storm which results in 1/4 of an inch of ice to accumulate on the surface of all exposed objects. This created hazardous conditions for walking and driving. Tree Branches and power lines can snap under the weight of the ice

Snow
Snow is the most basic type of winter time precipitation but can evolve into flurries,showers, squalls and blizzard. Snowflakes form when ice crystals cling to each other and to the ground.

Freezing Rain
Occurs when snow melts completely while falling and refreezes when it hits the ground and comes in contact with anything below 0 degrees C.

"Storm of the century generated heavy snow and hurricane force winds across 20 states"

1977 Jan 28-29
Buffalo NY
7 inches of new snow on top of 30 -35 inches already on the ground wind gust at about 70 m/h.Drifts were as high as 30 feet death toll reached 29. 7 Western New York counties were declared a national disaster areas.

1978 Feb 6-8
Eastern US
Claimed 54 lives and caused $1 billion in damages.Snow fall rains from 2-4 feet in New England plus 2 feet of snow already on the ground.

Eastern US
"Super Storm"
Paralized the eastern seaboard causing deaths of some 270 people rates of snow of 2-3 inches an hour.high winds caused $3-6 billion in damage.

1999 Jan 1-3
Midwest US
Major blizzard and sub-zero temperatures wreak havoc in Illinois Wisconsin Indiana Michigan and Ohio 73 were killed in the blizzard and transportation systems in the region were paralized damage reached about $500 million.

Where they most happen
Some areas are more likely to be hit by a snow storm but they are more common in the North-East states and in some Providences in Canada.
