The bond of family can either shield an individual from the dangers of the world,

or impose responsibilities that can negatively dominate and control that individuals life.

Parents take the time to develop a bond with their children. In those moments, the child learns the meaning of love, trust, hardship, struggle, and family. Later on in life, the child looks back at these positive memories to grow and develop into a positive individual.

Drug addiction does not only effect the drug user but also the family who surrounds them. The aspects in which the family once lived starts to revolve around the recovery and help that they could provide the drug user.

It is important that someone is brought up in a positive environment where they feel safe and want to express who they are. Family members provide each other with these kind of environments which helps in keeping the adults confident and independent, and the children growing up to become like that as well. These qualities are important because they contribute to an individuals happiness. In the long run, these qualities will aid in facing real life situations as well.

“If anybody lays even just one finger on that girl again, they better have shot me first.”(Woodrell 138)

In some families, financial situations can become dire. Sometimes greed arises while trying to collect money from things like an inheritance while in competition with siblings. This causes many bonds to be broken or strained for years. Sometimes family members go to great lengths to obtain that money, even if it means leaving a sibling in a poor situation.

Being able to fall back on a family member in a time of need builds a unique sort of trust. When two or more people are able to share and understand each others pains, it brings them closer together. Instead of feeling alone, they know that if they are ever going through a rough time they have each other for support through the dangers of the world.

Secrets breach the trust that family members should share with one another. Effective communication could be put on the line in relationships. Other emotions such as hate, resentment, and suspicion may arise as well. Lastly, lying to children, who are very intuitive could cause the trust between a child and a parent to finish. Not only that but it may or may not carry a life long feeling of regret for the child into adulthood.

Everyone needs elders in family to help them when they are introduce to a new aspect in life. This could imply to teenagers as they are exposed to a more adult situations or even women who have gotten pregnant for the first time. Having the right type of guidance can get them through their situations easier than they would alone. Guidance is important because it does not mean that one loses their independence to make decisions but they have people helping them make the right ones so they do not make mistakes.

“I got two kids who can’t feed themselves yet. My mom’s sick, and she’s always gonna be sick. Pretty soon the law’s comin and takin our house and throwing us out to live in the field like dogs. If dad is dead the debt is paid, and whoever killed him I don’t need to know all that. But I can’t forever carry them kids, and my mom…not without that house.”(Woodrell 134)

Emotional, physical, and sexual abuse not only has effects on the body and mind at the moment but the trauma stays with the victim throughout their whole lives. It cause distrust in family members, other people in society, and sometimes even themselves. This could possibly lead to difficulty maintaining relationships and friendships. Among the family, accusations of abusing someone else could be denied which could end in a dispute between families and even a divide.
