WOLF ADAPTATIONS

Wolf's Fur
The Wolf is a very interesting animal. The wolves that live in Cold habitats need their fur to be thick so they can keep warm as well as that the fur is white so the animal can camouflage in the snow. However wolves that live in forests have thick fur in the winter but in the summer it shreds so the fur is very thin. The forest Wolf also has dark fur so it can camouflage with in the dark surroundings. This is a very good way to differentiate the two.

Hunting
The Wolf hunts in a pack between 4 and 15 members. Wolves have large tough paws so they can run on the ground for long distances at a peak speed of 40 mph. Wolves also have brilliant eye site so they can spot prey from miles away. Their eye site is 20 times sharper than a human being. Some scientists believe wolves are colour bind, however there has been no sufficient evidence but the conclusion is that their eyes can see all colours clearly however they focus on only the colours of their prey .Together with the wolves eye site it has great sense of smell which is the Wolf's best sense. The wolf has a long nose above the lips and is able to smell prey from miles away. This extended nose gives them advantage for smelling prey.

Hunting
The Wolf's hearing is far superior to human beings. This is due to their large pointy ears which can move forwards, backwards and in all directions. This helps them to hear movement and detect which direction the prey is moving and with its lightning speed it could easily catch a full hoofed an animal such as a Elk or a Caribou. Their jaws are extraordinary they pull the animal and cut the animal in a scissor grip action. Their jaws can also bite with the pressure of 500 pounds of pressure per square inch, which helps them bite and kill the animal it wishes to hunt.

Communication
With the Wolf's excellent hearing it's howling helps to communicate with members of their pack miles away, a bit like dolphins talk through sound waves. Different howls determine what the Wolf is communicating for such as help or assistance because of intruders and to find the rest of the pack.
