PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HELLO IM LILY

  • Design lead for the Scottish widows app
  • Proud single mum
  • And card carrying feminist
  • So when this brief came into our team - the stars aligned

WE WERE SET A CHALLENGE

  • Come up with a piece of gamified women and retirement content that would raise awareness and affect change.
  • As we emersed ourselves in the problem space this quote became really meaningful.
  • As it speaks to what money really means to women.
  • It’s not an abstract thing. It means autonomy. And choice.

RESEARCH CULMINATED IN PROBLEM STATEMENT

  • HMW
  • And along with that how might we, we honed in on the motivators that were key to drive the behaviour change we were looking to drive
  • You’ll remember the challenge was awareness and action afterall.
  • 4 were key
  • But we heavily focussed on 2
  • Epic meaning
  • Social influence

IM NOW GOING TO TAKE OWN ADVICE

  • I know it
  • I’m growing it
  • So I’m now going to talk about the F word
  • Not on a societal level, but on a personal one.

5 YEARS AGO I LEFT A NOT SO GREAT SITUATION

  • With my 1 year old son
  • A pram
  • And the clothes on our backs
  • We were headed for temporary accommodation
  • But I was determined to give my son the life he deserved, regardless of what had happened to us

AFTER YEARS IN THAT SITUATION

  • My finances were decimated
  • There were loans taken out under duress
  • Credit cards I didn’t know about.
  • But I was determined to build our life back up again.

AND I DID IT

  • Do you want to know how I did it?
  • I talked about finances
  • Constantly. Relentlessly. And after a while, without shame.
  • I gave evidence to the police. To the amazing debt support teams at the Bank of Scotland. And eventually to the grey panel at Lloyds banking group who took the evidence and wrote off the loan.

AND NOW HERE I AM

  • On this stage
  • At this beautiful hotel.
  • At this amazing event
  • Talking to you all about financial independence from a place of lived experience.

THERE ARE SADLY LOTS OF STORIES LIKE MINE

  • But hearing these stories is important.
  • It’s stories that have pushed for legislative change, for the right to vote, for the right to open our own bank accounts.
  • I’m telling you this story to highlight that money isn’t an abstract thing.
  • It’s not just 1’s and 0’s pounds and pence.
  • It’s autonomy, it’s freedom, it’s resilience and it’s independence for many women.

SO LETS KEEP TALKING ABOUT THE F WORD

  • I talked about it a lot to reclaim my future.
  • Let’s help women in the UK own their tomorrow too.
  • Thank you.
