WOMEN IN THE 1950's

A rise of opportunity

WWII

  • During WWII, more women than ever entered the paid workforce.
  • With men in the military, it left managerial jobs to women, and other jobs in the industry.
  • Propaganda was a major attribute to women joining the workforce.

End of WWII

  • At the end of WWII, men returned to the civilian workforce.
  • Employers then encouraged women to leave their jobs.
  • Major media began to convince women to return to their stereotypical role

  • Message media was sending-get married and raise a family.
  • Couples then began to get married a in their late teens, early twenties.
  • By the late 1950's almost 2/3's of women dropped out before graduation

THE STEREOTYPE

  • Women began to see themselves as servants and bedmakers.
  • Many who also saw this image sought professional help.
  • Women believed they were doing all there was and were afraid
  • Women often found themselves asking the question "Is this all there is?"

Numbers OF THE DECADE

  • Women who were in college or had previous jobs rejoined the force.
  • When the women joined the force again they were often in lower-paying jobs
  • Numbers of single working women declined, while wives and mothers increase

  • Many suburban mothers began working in schools, small offices while close to home
  • This allowed the mothers to work but still be able to take care of their kids needs.
  • Over the next decades, a trend of houses that hold both mothers and fathers
  • with jobs grow over 10 million
