"Women have made up their minds to go to the Klondike, so there is no use trying to discourage them."

WERE THERE WOMEN IN THE YUKON?

  • Male dominated, but 1 out of 10 stampeders was a woman
  • Many of the women were dance hall girls, nuns, or shopkeepers, teachers, tourists
  • Some came with husbands
  • Some came to find their future
  • Over 1,000 women crossed the Chilkoot Or White Pass Trail between 1896-1900

LIFE WAS MORE DIFFICULT FOR WOMEN

  • Women's clothes made it harder
  • High heeled boots, bloomers, corsets
  • Ankle length skirts, blouses and bonnets
  • Had to care for children
  • Complete all domestic chores: cook, clean, laundry, etc.

BEFORE THE GOLD RUSH

THERE WERE SOME WOMEN IN THE KLONDIKE BEFORE THE GOLD RUSH

FAMOUS WOMEN

  • Emilie Fortin- 21 year old French Canadian crossed Forty Mile
  • Belinda Mulroney- 1st woman to cross the Chilkoot Trail in 1847
  • "Richest woman in Klondike"
  • Made her fortune building roadhouses and hotels
