FACTS ABOUT HERMAN

  • Born 16,1913
  • Died October 29,1987
  • Played the clarinet, saxophone, and singer
  • In 1925 he joined in big bands of Tom Gerun and Gus Arnhiem.
  • Created "That Band That Plays Blues"
  • Performed in radio broadcasting with Harry Sosnik.
  • After "That Band That Plays The Blues" he joined Isham Jones Ochestra
he started playing the saxophone when he was eleven and four years later became a professional musician
His Band started when his first band that he was in, leader chose to stop anc Woddy took some of them and made his band

he joined Isham Jones ochastra.

  • Started inside another band once that band officially broke apart
  • In the beginning they sung ballad and would have others singers with them.
  • Louis Armstrong was also a member in this band
  • New members were often added through out the years
  • He never tried to make himself the star attraction.

Many people called it Herman's Herd. Herman's Herd was very different, the saxophone section was like no other it was set up with three tenor and one barotone.

  • The University of Texas in Houston established the Woody Herman School of Music
  • Encore (1963), Giant Step (1973), Thundering Herd (1974); all received Grammy awards
  • Received an honorary doctor of music degree from the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
