Meeting etiqutte: do's & don't

  • Arrive on time
  • Be prepared
  • Interrupt politely
  • Turn the phone on vibrate or mute
  • Offer solutions to problems
Here is a list of what you should and should not do in workplace meetings.
First, punctuality is important
Simply arriving on time is not enough; you must have your stationary ready.
When you want to say something in a meeting, use an expression such as, "Excuse me for the interruption."
Have your phone on mute or vibrate mode and only answer in an emergency.
Last, be constructive in presenting solutions to real problems.

Virtual Meetings

Nowadays, virtual meetings are much more common in many workplaces. Sometimes, they are referred to online meetings.

Online meetings follow the same basic principles used for in-person workplace meetings.
First, planning and preparation are important, so make sure you join the meeting link on time and ensure your audiovisuals function properly.
You want to remove any distractions, such as noise and that glassware sitting on the table behind you.
When asking or responding to meeting points, allow for some time because we are dealing with online communication, so there might be a slight lag.

elements of effective meeting

  • Create an agenda
  • Decide venue and time
  • Send agenda to participants
  • Keep discussion focused on agenda items
  • Allow everyone to speak on items
  • Obtain a copy of the meeting mintues
An effective meeting includes listing several items discussed in a meeting as an agenda, and the agenda should be sent at least 1 week before to the meeting participants.
Finding a meeting location and setting a specific time help in planning.
The meeting chair ensures that the discussion does not include non-agenda items.
Each meeting participant should have the chance to speak.
Finally, someone will be assigned to take meeting notes, and the notes should be emailed to meeting attendees.
