ISLANDS AND PROTECTED AREAS OF THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA

  • Has 244 islands
  • Located on the Gulf of California in north-eastern Mexico
  • Has islands with high cliffs and sandy beaches
  • contains 39% of the world’s total number of species of marine mammals

MONARCH BUTTERFLY RESERVE

  • protects overwintering sites for the monarch butterfly.
  • Millions of monarch butterflies return to this site every year
  • Up to a billion monarch butterflies return annually
  • northwest of Mexico City.
  • The tree branches bend from the weight of the monarchs

EL TAJIN, PRE-HISPANIC CITY

  • 'Pyramid of the Niches', a masterpiece of ancient Mexican architecture
  • Located in the state of Veracruz
  • The settlement has a population of 15.000 - 20.000 inhabitants

CAMINO REAL DE TIERRA ADENTRO

  • was the Royal Inland Road, also known as the Silver Route.
  • The route was actively used as a trade route for 300 years
  • Was for transporting silver extracted from the mines
  • from Mexico City to Santa Fe.

EL PINACATE AND GRAN DESIERTO DE ALTAR BIOSPHERE RESERVE

  • It has two main parts to it and one would be the dormant volcanic Pinacate Shield of black and red lava flows
  • And the second part is changing and varied sand dunes that can reach a height of 200 metres.
  • located in the Sonoran Desert.
  • Has Ten enormous, deep and almost perfectly circular craters
  • including endemic freshwater fish species and the endemic Sonoran Pronghorn,
