henry hudson

  • born 1570 in England
  • died 1611
  • married to a woman named katherine
  • had three sons Jon, Oliver, Richard

FIRST EXPEDITION

  • Set sail in May of 1607
  • His boat was called the hopewell
  • He sailed up north up the coast of Greenland to an island called Spitsbergen
  • They had to turn back to because they got stuck in ice

SECOND EXPEDITION

  • in 1608 he set sail once again to find a northeast passage
  • he tried to sail over the northern part of russia
  • he once again got stuck in ice and had to turn back

third expedition

  • the company that payed for Hudson's first two expeditions lost hope that he couldn't find a northeast passage
  • he went to the dutch and soon had another ship to sail wit called the half moon
  • the dutch told him to find a passage around Russia going to Novaya Zemlya
  • but hudson decided to take a different route but because extreme cold weather he turn around and sail to North America
  • he then traveled south until he found a river he had to turn back when he got back the king was angry at him for sailng with the dutch

FORTH EXPOSITION

  • after he was released from his house arrest he once again set sail to find the northwest passage
  • this time he was funded by the virgna company
  • he took te discovery of north america and tried to sail further north and he sailed through a strait into the bay
  • he was sure they could find a way to asia through the bay.. he didnt treat his crew well and they were starving
  • the finally had enough and pt him and a few loyal members into a small boat a sent him adrift then the rest of the crew went home
