THE MING AND QING DYNASTIES

GEOGRAPHIC CONSIDERATIONS

  • Sizes of the Ming and Qing Dynasties are at their highest point
  • Both stretched across the Eastern side of China

ART AND ARCHITECTURE

  • Artwork of both of these empires were similar and simplistic
  • They had heaviest impact from nature and what was around them
  • Such as tigers, flowers, and dragons
  • Architecture of these empires was very sharp structured hero ugh their cultures

GOVERNMENT

  • Ruled by families and passed down
  • The families had absolute power
  • Restored the merit-based civil service examination system
  • Civil service: administrative departments of a government
  • Hired on the basis of their scores on examinations

SOCIAL ORGANIZATION

  • Favored men in society
  • Supreme legal authority
  • Peasants were the lowest class

TRADE

  • High Demand for Chinese goods
  • Silk-making and ceramics grew rapidly
  • Didn't become highly industrialized-
  • Idea of commerce offended Confucian beliefs
  • Confucianism- simple way of life, closer to nature, didn't promote trade of merchandise or ideas/religious influence

  • Chinese economy policies traditionally favored agriculture
  • Agriculture trade stayed low
  • Manufacturing and trade tax skyrocketed

RELIGON

  • Christian missionary's accompanied European traders into china
  • They brought Christianity and knowledge of European science and technology
  • Such as the clock
  • Jesuits were allowed to preach in China
  • The first missionary to have an impact was an Italian Jesuit, Matteo Ricci

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Culture was based on traditional forms
  • The great masterpiece of Chinese fiction was written during this period
  • Irrigation and fertilization increased during this period
  • As food production increased nutrion improved in families, this led to a population explosion
