BUDDHISM

  • Originated in India
  • Teaches the philosophy to lead a moral life
  • Holy book called Tipitaka
  • Moral law is to follow the philosophy of "The way of life"
  • Siddhartha Gotama was the leader. Final goal is to reach enlightenment.

HINDUISM

  • Originated in India
  • Teachings based on the cycle of rebirth and karma
  • Holy book is the Santand dharma
  • Moral is to do good in like so you may prosper in the after life
  • Brahmins. Final goal to have salvation in the after life.

JUDAISM

  • Originated in Canaan
  • Teach the four pathways
  • Holy book Torah
  • Moral law is to follow the 10 commandments
  • Leaders consist of priest and God. Final goal-live life in harmony with god

CHRISTIANITY

  • Origins: started in the Middle East, the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea
  • Teachings: taught that God was merciful and loving.
  • Holy Book: the Christian Bible mostly from the New Testament
  • Moral law: the 10 commandments
  • Leaders: Jesus and his disciples Final Goal: to be a good Christian and end up in Heaven

ISLAM

  • Origin: the Middle East in the 600s C.E after Judaism and Christianity
  • Teaching: the lifestyle of the prophet Muhammed
  • Moral law: the Five Pillars of Islam
  • Holy book: The Holy Quran
  • Leader: Muhammad Final Goal: be better in their present life to have a better after life.

CONFUCIANISM

  • Formed in 500 B.C.E. Originated in China
  • Teaching was based on the teachings of Kongfuzi believed in the revival of traditional Chinese culture
  • 4 books- Mencius, Doctrine of the mean, The Analects of Confucius, the Great learning.
  • Moral law-5 basic relationships in society. Filial piety was crucial (respect for parents)
  • Leader-Confucius and Final goals were to help create a peaceful world
