RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD

Judaism

Founder: Abraham

He founded Judaism around 2000-1800 B.C.E.

The most common known jewish writing is the Torah

Jews believe there is one God- the God of Abraham

They do not consider Jesus to be the Messiah; they believe the Messiah has not yet arrived

Jews believe the Holy Spirit to be the spirit of God who rests upon them

They believe in order to attain salvation, you must live a righteous life

Jews believe in life after death- a reward for those who lived a worthy life

These are some of the relics in the Jewish culture

Christianity

Founder: Jesus of Nazareth

Christianity was founded around 33 AD

Christian known writings:
The Bible

Christians believe there is one God- the Father who created all

They believe Jesus is the Son of God who was sent to save mankind from death and sin

Christians believe in the Holy Spirit as a spirit of God who is present today to be a guide for Christians

They believe salvation is achieved by following the necessary steps given to us by the Bible

Christians believe in life after death.

Those who are saved spend eternity in paradise (heaven)
Those who are not saved are eternally punished in hell

Islam

Founder: Muhammad

He founded Islam in 622 CE

The Qur'an is the primary text of Islam

Muslims believe in one God named Allah

They believe Jesus was one of Gods (Allah's) greatest messengers. They do not believe He was crucified

Muslims believe in a Holy Spirit of their own

They believe salvation is attained by living in a way that pleases Allah and gaining his paradise

Muslims believe in life after death where you live in paradise with Allah

Hinduism

Founder: There is no specific founder of Hinduism
Date founded: Hinduism was formed around 2000 B.C.E.

The primary texts of Hinduism are called Vedas

-Hindus believe in Brahma as the supreme being and creator; they believe in many other gods as well

-They do not view Jesus as the savior and they don't believe in His resurrection

-Hindus do not believe in the Holy Spirit or anything similar

-There's no need of knowledge of salvation in Hinduism

Hindus believe firmly in the rebirth of souls after death

Buddhism

Founder: Siddhartha Guatama

Date founded: 520 B.C.E.

The common name for Buddhist writings is Sutras

Buddhism does not involve a "one true God"; instead they look to Buddha as an example

Most Buddhists believe Jesus was a prophet who dedicated his life to the welfare of people, but not the Messiah

Buddhists believe in "Holy Ones" like Buddha, Dharma, the Sangha, but a specific Holy Spirit is not relevant to them

Salvation is not related to Buddhism at all

Buddhists believe that death is not the end of life. The spirit remains and dwells in a new body (rebirth)

Sikhism

Founder: Guru Nanak

Date Founded: 1496

The Sikhist sacred text is known as the Shri Guru Granth

Sikhism beliefs include a one true god

They don't believe Jesus is Gods son

Sikhists do not believe the Holy Spirit exists

They do not strive for a specific goal in salvation; they believe anyone can achieve it

Sikhists do not believe in heaven or hell, just reincarnation

Confucianism

Founder: Confucius

Date Founded: 500 B.C.E.

The known Confucianist writings are the Analects, the Five classics, the Four books

Confucianist believe there is no god, but a force called Tao (Great Ultimate)

They respect Jesus as a holy man of Christianity, but do not view him as the savior

Confucianists don't believe in a specific plan of salvation

They believe after death, the soul remains in some other form

Here are some Confucianist relics

Shinto

Shintoism has no specific founder

There is no recorded date of its foundation

The Kojiki and Nihon Shoki are the two central texts of Shintoism

Shintos believe in Kami who is their god

They believe Jesus only to have been a translator for them and their religion

Shintos believe in Kami as their holy spirit. It is full of sacred spirits

They believe Kami is the center of everyone's salvation

Shintos believe that after death, the spirit leaves the body and goes to yami

Taoism

Founder: Lao Tze

Date founded: 550 BCE

The central text of Taoism is known as the Tao-te Ching

There is no ominous god in Taoism, only Tao whom they look toward

They do not believe in Jesus as the Messiah

Taoists do not have a Holy Spirit; they have Chi- a life force which forms the world

Taoist salvation is considered "liberation". They believe that following the natural order of things instead of rules/doctrine makes for perfection

Taoists believe you shouldn't worry about death or afterlife, but live and be eternal in your life
