The Beginning

The Invasion of poland

  • Germany Invades Poland on September 1st 1939
  • The United Kingdom and France declare war on Germany
  • Poland Falls in 5 weeks to Germany

The Invasion of France

  • Germany started there invasion on May 10th 1940 
  • Germany ended its campaign 42 days later 
  • The allies suffered 2 million casualties 
  • Their campaign ended with the surrender of France

Operation Barborassa

  • Hitler invades the Soviet Union in June of 1941
  • The Germans took advantage of the poor Soviet defense 
  • and forced Russia into a massive retreat 

Turning Points

Stalingrad

  • Stalingrad is a large city on the River Volga
  • The soviets used this city to take their stand 
  • against the German Blitzkrieg 
  • It ended as a major Soviet victory and turned the tide
  • This one battle took the lives of 3 million people 

Hitlers declaration of War

  • On December 11th 1941 Hitler declared war on the United States
  • He did this at the instance of his Japanese ally  
  • It gave the allies a huge advantage in man power in the west

The end

The Mediteranean

  • Germany and Italy had been fighting England in N.A. since 1941 
  • The axis forces are forced to withdraw due to being attacked on two sides
  • The allies land in Sicily and Italy in 1943 and continue to fight there   
  • till the end of the war.

Russian Counter Attack

  • Russia Starts its offensive after Stalingrad in 1943.
  • Drives Germany out of U.S.S.R
  • by late 1944 they are almost on German soil.

Allied invasion of france

  • The western allies start there invasion of occupied France
  • on June 6th 1944.
  • The first set foot on German soil 6 months later in December.

Battle of the Bulge

  • The Battle of the Bulge was Hitlers last attempt to 
  • turn the tide of the war in his favor.
  • The Germans attacked In the Arden forest in an 
  • attempt to drive on Antwerp a key port to allied 
  • supplies.  but they never make it and are pushed back.
