Some Background

  • Uzziah - my strength is Jehovah
  • 52 years of prosperity
  • Lot's of sin...anyway
  • Political transition and uncertainty - first of 5 kings Isaiah would serve under
  • 2 Chronicles 26:16 sums it all up
  • Until.....

52 years of prosperity, expansion, and achievement materially

Lot's of sin...anyway 2 Kings 15:1-4, in bad shape spiritually

Political transition and uncertainty, much like today - things on earth are in a boil, but not in heave

2 Chronicles 26:16 sums it all up, you can read about his accomplishments....

Until.....

2 Kings 15:1-5

15 In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah[a] son of Amaziah king of Judah began to reign. 2 He was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years. His mother’s name was Jekoliah; she was from Jerusalem. 3 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father Amaziah had done. 4 The high places, however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.

5 The Lord afflicted the king with leprosy[b] until the day he died, and he lived in a separate house.[c] Jotham the king’s son had charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.

Scripture Reading

Isaiah 6:1-8

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty the whole earth is full of his glory.”At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

A Personal

experience
verse 1

verse 5

verse 5

verse 5

verse 5 I myself have seen the Lord

verse 7 - he touched me

Looking Up

at God
1b - 2

seated - not pacing the room, anxious concerned, but sovereign and in control

high - word used to describe the place where God lives

exalted- in contrast to just one of many gods, He is the God - above the petty politics of human self centeredness

"glorious" - train filled the temple

holy, holy, holy - Hebrew way of saying the holiest....

not apart of the system, but one who comes from outside of it...you can see the difference in worship - the other world religions have potions, processes that are designed to get the system to work for them, in their favor- CS Lewis in his book on Miracles

forgiving

sending

while what Isaiah could see, the outlook was bleak, the uplook was glorious!!

Interaction

with God
verse 4

verse 7

verse 8

not to mention having a front row seat for the activity in the throne room

Self-evaluation

with God's holiness as the standard

Woe to me - I am ruined.....headed for a violent and destructive end, unless God

I a man of unclean lips - what comes out of our mouths is a picture of our heart....

among a people of unclean lips - unclean lips that render me unable to approach God, I have them myself and I am surrounded by people in the same situation

recognizes his sinfulness before the Lord and before Isaiah even asks a seraph - (burning one) is dispatched to cleanse Isaiah, to pay for his sin - thus the word atone for in NIV

reminding us that the throne of the sovereign king and judge is accompanied by the source of forgiveness, the altar

necessary step before being sent out for ministry

God's initiative
God's messenger
God's purifying fire
God's removal of my guilt
God's atonement - payment for my sin

Motivational

clarify your purpose - sin clouds our vision, judgment, and hinders our sense of certainty

re-introduces you to your direction

worship has you volunteering instead of avoiding.....

here am I send me!
