Historical uses beginning in the 17th -18th century consisted of fences,gates, canopies, lamps,grills,porches,etc.
It began in the Iron Age in the United States.
Ended the overwhelming use in the 1800's

INTERESTING FACTS

  • wrought iron was first used for weapons but as time passed it started being used to cover doors and windows as protection.
  • Demand for wrought iron was strongest in 1860's when iron started becoming popular.
  • Generally there are two different types of wrought iron, charcoal and puddle iron.
  • One of the first ways they started to produce wrought iron and other iron was in bloomeries, a sort of furnace with a pit and chimney.
  • "Wrought iron" comes from the word work, so the term basically means worked iron.
