PRESENTATION OUTLINE

AFRICAN AMERICANS IN WW1

Wanted to be entered through draft (to win respect of white citizens) but couldn't until they were going up against Germany and needed more people.

Didn't get equal treatment but some got higher positions. White men refused to salute black officers.

Not more than 1/4 trainees in any army camp could be African American. Despite their treatment, they continued enlisting. Began to have "equal" treatment after fighting awhile.

Only free blacks could enlist. Over 200,000 African Americans fought in France and none fought along the side of American troops.
