ANIMALS IN THE WAR

  • some animals used in the war were: slugs, glow worms, horses, dogs, elephants, pigeons, and camels

WHAT THEY WERE USED FOR

  • slugs were used to detect gas
  • horses held anything they could hold also the troops rode them into action
  • dogs could smell enemy troops or can be a companion
  • glow worms glowed in the dark so the army men could read and write letters if they didn’t have a light
  • Pigeons carried notes that needed to be delivered
  • elephants held more important war gear also people could have rode them
  • camels were rode by troops for a long distance journey

FACTS

  • 16 million animals were used
  • 8 million animals died
  • They still use animals in the army to this day

  • The hell fighters were an infantry regiment of the New York national guard made up of African Americans
  • They spent more time in combat than any other American unit
  • The Harlem hellfighters arrived home to racist comments even though they were so brave for standing up for our country
  • They were on the American side

THE XMAS TRUCE

  • They were on a truce just for the Christmas Day than went back to fighting
  • It occurred in 1914
  • Only a group did the truce while the other sides in different parts were still fighting

What the sides of the war thought about the truce
first off Pope Benedict XV who was the Pope during 1914 thought of the idea The allied side thought it was a trick at first.
Everyone enjoyed the day off the sides both had time to write letters back home, play football, bury fallen soldiers bodies, and feast!
