FEARED FOREIGNERS

  • Spying (most people from Wisconsin from Germany *newly immigrants*)
  • Started restrictions on immigration
  • Made literacy test so the immigrants had to know how to read english

"HATE THE HUNS"

  • Called Germans Huns referring to the people who had brutally attacked Europe in the fifth and forth centuries
  • A lot of things turned anti German
  • Stopped teaching German in schools, books by German authors were taken off library shelves, ect.
  • Mob lynched a German born citizen who had also tried to enlist in the navy
  • This lynching was one of many wartime attacks on germans

CRISIS

  • Espionage act- making it illegal to interfere with the war draft
  • Sedition Act- any speech or action that encourages rebellion (took away first amendment)
  • 1,500 prosecutions
  • Won more than 1,000 convictions

  • This is the most important crisis because it took away our freedom of speech
