Where is located?
Born in the mountains of the Himalayas and flows through the states of Delhi , Uttar Pradesh and Haryana before emptying into the Ganges in Allahabad . It passes through the cities of Delhi, Mathura and Agra .

Why is it so sacred for its people?

  • The Yamuna is named after the goddess Yamuna
  • The daughter of Surya, the sun god and the twin sister of Yama, the god of death. It is said that when Yama left his family to rule over the underworld, Yamuna cried so much that her tears became the river.

characteristics

  • People who bathe in the river will not only be cleansed of their sins, but also spared a painful death.

Why is it called ¨The Stolen River¨

  • Because as whe travel a few kilometers downstream we find not a single drop of water the riverbed is dry there is nothing but rocks and has in sense been stolen

What is happening to theYamuna River?

  • The waters of the Yamuna river are far from clear, but they are at least more transparent and fair than the Ganges. Anyway, this river also is one of the most polluted in the world , with 58% of waste from New Delhi.
  • now no longer part of drinking water, but its waters are still used for irrigation; and about 57 million people depend directly on their supply.

Supreme Court decision taken in 1996

  • Ordered that fresh water be allowed to flow all the way down the monument but that directive has never been acting on

Characteristics of Yamuna river

  • The 70% of supply of drinking water in Delhi is not suitable for human consumption.
  • Children are poisoned and die from pollution
  • The river Yamuna is dead.
