Where is it located?

  • Yamuna River, also called Jumna, major river of northern India, primarily in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh states. It is one of the country’s most-sacred rivers.

Why is it so sacred for its people?

  • Yamuna is a sacred river in Hinduism and the main tributary of the Ganges (Ganga), the holiest river of Hinduism. The river is worshipped as a Hindu goddess called Yamuna. In the Vedas, Yamuna is known as Yami, while in later literature, she is called Kalindi. In the Vedas, Yami is associated with her twin brother and partner Yama, the god of death. Later, she is associated with the god Krishna as one of Ashtabharya, his consort as well and plays an important role in his early life as a river. Bathing and drinking Yamuna's waters is regarded to remove sin.

Why is it called ¨The Stolen River¨?

  • The God Indra Sagara stole his horse and this, very angry sent all his children around the Earth to find the animal, which was eventually found in the underwold.

What is happening to theYamuna River?

  • The Yamuna is one of the most important rivers of north India. It passes through Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. It merges with the Ganga at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. At one time, it was the lifeline for the people of the area, but today it is the most polluted river of the country.

What was the Supreme Courtdecision taken in 1996 about?

  • In major seatback to Haryanas request for re-assessing Delhi demnads for water, the upper Yamuna river board has not just turn down the appeal but insisted that Haryana stick to the 1996.
  • The supreme court order directing it to release that required quantum of water to the nacional capital.
