HISTORY

  • The Mariposa War major, Jim Savage, led troops against chief Tenaya
  • John Muir and Robert Underwood Johnson had grown concerns about the devistating effects of sheep
  • grazing in the high country
  • Yosemite's first residents were Native Americans known as the Ahwahneechee who may have first inhabited
  • the region as many as 10,000 years ago

  • located in Yosemite Village, California
  • size- 1,190 square miles (3,081 square kilometers)
  • one of the oldest nature preserves in the U.S.
  • Male deer (bucks) shed their antlers every fall after mating season
  • they grow them back in the spring
