WHAT ARE THEY?

  • What are zapotecs The Zapotec civilization was an indigenous pre-Columbian civilization
  • The Zapotec left archaeological evidence at the ancient city of Monte Albán
  • the form of buildings, ball courts, magnificent tombs and grave goods including finely worked gold jewelry.

RELIGION

  • Like most Mesoamerican religious systems the Zapotec religion was polytheistic.
  • Two principal deities include Cocijo, the rain god and the god of ligth
  • It is believed that the Zapotec sometimes used human sacrifice in their rituals

GOVERNMENT

  • The Zapotec's government was based upon politics, economics, religion and social.
  • They were ruled by power, prestige and wealth
  • Their capital was Monte Alban. Monte Alban was a politically neutral and centrally located city.
