WHEN AND HOW?

  • Zebra Mussels are believed to have come from Caspian Sea in the late 1980's.
  • They have now spread through 20 U.S. States.

WHY ARE THEY A PROBLEM?

  • Zebra Mussels, filter up to a liter of water per day but in the process of all the filter they also eat all the plankton. Which plankton as you may know is food for fish, so that causes problems for the wild life.
  • Another problem is they also clog up piping which backs up the water

SOLUTIONS

  • Radiowaves- A researcher from Purdue University figured out that they can kill Zebra Mussels.
  • Pseudomonas fluorescens- This is a bacteria that is deadly to Zebra Mussels
  • Also ways to contain them is to wash your boats very well before you got from lake to lake
