WHO?

  • Zechariah was the son of Berechiah and the grandson of Iddo.
  • Audience: Jews returned from the Exile
-He came from one of the Priestly families of the tribe of Levi
-He was the 11th minor prophet

KEY THEMES

  • A command to rebuild the temple
  • The message that God will win the final victory

WHEN?

  • Ministry: 520 BC - 518BC
Jews were freed from Babylonian exile in 539 B.C.

WHERE?

  • Originated from: Babylonia
  • Returned to Jerusalem in 538
  • His ministry was in Jerusalem (South)

WHY?

  • Zechariah was a prophet after the Exile
-The people had to learn and how to be faithful to God and the covenant again
-Zechariah had to make sure the people were ready for the Messianic Kingdom and had faith in God unlike their ancestors.

HOW?

  • He guides the people
  • He portrays God as a king
  • People are portrayed as unable to be faithful
-and asks them questions about their readiness for the future

-King of the coming Messianic Kingdom as well as a caring God for the people
-God is very watchful
-God is also leader and brings joy
-Zechariah had 8 visions or dreams each having symbolism
-people need to learn how to be faithful

SUMMARY OF BOOK

& BACKGROUND INFO
-Jeremiah had stated that the exile will last 70 years and then God would restore his presence to a new temple and bring his Kingdom and rule of Messiah over all nations.
-Beginning of book says 70 years are almost up
-However it seemed like this was never going to come true

  • Introduction (1: 1-6)
  • Zechariah’s dreams and visions (1: 7-6)
  • Conclusion (7-8)
  • Poetry and Prophecy (9-11) and (12-14)
-Poetry, and Prophecy include oracles

INTRODUCTION

  • Zechariah challenges his generation to turn back to God
  • Says to not be like their ancestors
-says to not be like ancestors whose rebelling landed them in Exile
The people seem to respond positively to Zechariah

ZECHARIAH’S DREAMS AND VISIONS

  • There are 8 nighttime visions
  • They explained current events or point to future
  • Dreams are connected
-The idea of God speaking in dreams is rooted in Genesis
-dreams that are connected:

1 and 8
2 and 7
3 and 6
4 and 5 + bonus

DREAMS 1 & 8

  • Both have 4 horsemen on patrol
  • Horsemen represent Gods attentive watch over nations
  • World was at peace
-God says he will fill Promises of Messianic Kingdom but time is left unclear
-world at peace refers to how God raised up Persia to conquer Babylon and bring peace

DREAMS 2 & 7

  • Both were about Israel’s past sins that led up to the Exile
The number 4 symbolizes there universality
Then horns are scattered by a group of blacksmith (Persia)
2nd dream- 4 horns that symbolize nations who attacked and scattered Israel (Assyria and Babylon).
7th dream- a woman is in a basket who is a symbol of the centuries of Israel’s convenant rebellion

DREAMS 3 & 6

  • Both are about rebuilding of a New Jerusalem
Jerusalem will be inhabited like villages with out walls. The Lord says he will be a wall of fire around it and the glory within it. New Jerusalem is purified and free from sin

DREAMS 4 & 5

  • Messianic Kingdom will only come if people are faithful
-Joshua is described wearing dirty and torn clothes
-He is then given new clothes and a new turban
-Dirty clothes are a symbol of “wearing Israel’s sin”
An angel appears saying if he is faithful he will lead his people into the Messianic Kingdom
-5th God says the temple will only be successful if Joshua and Zerubabbel depend on the Holy Spirit

ANOTHER VISION

  • There is another vision that ties into the 4th and 5th dreams.
-In it Joshua is given a crown as a symbol of future Messianic Priest-King.

CONCLUSION

  • Zechariah reminds them of their ancestors mistakes
  • Zechariah tells them that this generation will only see the Messianic Kingdom if they stay faithful to the covenant
-Ancestors who rejected God and in turn led to the Exile
-Group of Israelites who had been mourning the destruction of the temple come to Zechariah and ask him if it is time to stop mourning
-Zechariah asks them “will the become people who are ready to participate in Gods kingdom- people don’t answer

IMAGES OF MESSIANIC KINGDOM

  • 9-10 Describe the coming of the Messianic King riding on a donkey into New Jerusalem
  • 11- The King is symbolized as a shepherd over the flock of Israel
-and becomes rejected by his own people and then by their leaders who are also symbolized by shepherds
-Will rejection last forever?

IMAGES OF MESSIANIC KINGDOM

  • Rejection will not last forever
  • Poems and images about future Messianic Kingdom
  • Depicts New Jerusalem
-God says he is going to pour out his spirit on the people so they can repent and grieve over the fact that they have rejected their Messianic Shepherd
-as a place where God’s justice confronts and defeats evil among the nations

FINAL CHAPTER

  • New Jerusalem is the gathering point for all of the nations
the city becomes a new Garden of Eden

If the people disobey the messianic kingdom with not come

We read the prophet Zechariah so we can learn the message that god gave the people through Zechariah’s visions, he talks a lot about being faithful
