THE TORTOISE PARADOX

  • Achilles is challenged by a tortoise to a foot race.
  • Achilles allows the tortoise a head start.
  • Little did he know... He had already lost!

TORTOISE PARADOX

  • The explanation is that, in order to overtake the turtle... Achilles must reach the halfway point between him and the turtle.
  • He must then go halfway between him and the turtle again, and again and again. (i.e. 1/2,1/4,1/8...)

TORTOISE PARADOX

  • Because distance can be infinitely divided in half, there is an infinite distance between Achilles and the tortoise.
  • It is impossible to complete and infinite amount of tasks in a set amount of time.
  • Therefore, Achilles can never overtake the tortoise.
  • The pursuer can never catch up to the pursued.
