Zephaniah

Chapter 1

  • Zephaniah lived during the reign of Josiah
  • God says that he will wipe everything from the face of the Earth
  • God gives this message to Judah through Zephaniah

Chapter 2

  • God offers safety from destruction to all who turn to him and repent
  • He tells his people to also seek righteousness and humility
  • He continues by addressing individual nations and how he will destroy them

Chapter 3

  • God says that Jerusalem is not safe from the wrath of God
  • But God also promises to restore Israel's status afterward.
  • Zephaniah says that Israel will remain unrepentant.

OVERARCHING QUESTIONS

  • God required his people to be repentant and turn to him.
  • God wants the same of us today.
  • God expects us to place our faith in him and trust him.
  • "...before the day of the LORD's wrath comes upon you,
  • seek the LORD,... you who does what he commands"(Ch.2 v.2-3)

3 Points of Prophecy

  • 1. Zepheniah is rooted in the Old Testament commands to no have no other Gods
  • 2. Zephaniah points to the future of Earth when God will judge all people
  • and destroy the Earth
  • 3. This book is concerned with the problems taking place at the time, mostly the
  • worship of other Gods and a lack of faith in God.

Assyria

  • Assyria was a major power at the time of this book(640BC)
  • Zephaniah prophesied the destruction of many nations, including Assyria.
  • Soon after Zephaniah was written, Assyria collapsed in about 612BC
  • Nineveh, the capitol of Assyria, was destroyed during the collapse.
