General Info The river serves as an unofficial boundary between the north and south of Taiwan. It is dammed in its upper reaches by the Wushoh and Wujie Dams and further downstream by the Chichi Weir. It stretches 186 Km and with a basin of 3,155.21 km2,crossing Yunlin County, Changhua County and Nantou County.
The Zhuoshui River has a great environment with rich soil, water, climate and sufficient water for irrigation. Perfect for growing crops, fruits and vegetables. The rice is so good in fact, people even call it the 'rice for the emperor.'
Negative Effects The ZhuoShui River environment has in recent years been seriously degraded both by the construction of a dam across the river at Jiji and by the ongoing activities of the concrete industry.
Positive effects The Zhuoshui river has rich, fertile soil, clean water, and water sufficient for irrigation. The local's rice has been so good, that they even preserved the method for hundreds of years! Now and before, people still call the Zhuoshui rice 'The Rice For The Emperor'.
First Settlement The Bunong tribe was the first to settle near the ZhuoShui River in the 18th century down streams as their main settlement. They chose this as their settlement because of the rich soil, sufficient and clean water for both irrigation and supply uses.
Pollution Pollution has brought destruction to the paradise. The river banks was polluted when factories roam the nearby settlements. Though most garbage has already been cleared out nowadays, it had forced some of the tribes to settle deep in the mountains. The ZhuoShui river now belongs to the Hans.
Floods Regarding the pollution and floods, it has already killed animal and even human lives. Since there are more than 1 typhoon every year in Taiwan, the rivers gradually rise and floods the nearby lands.
River Banks Polluted Pollution has destroyed human possibilities of creating a better world. At the banks of the ZhuoShui river,it has been polluted. What we can do is to shut down the neighboring factories and clean up the mess quickly...before destruction strikes again.
Beigang Chao-Tian temple is located in Yunlin, which the ZhuoShui river has crossed through.Matzu is one of the major folk beliefs in coastal provinces in China. In Taiwan, Matzu and Wangye could be two of the prevalent beliefs. Since Sung Dynasty, there have been two different viewpoints about the issue whether Matzu really lived. Most followers believe the saying that Matzu, with the surname Lin, lived in Meichou Islet in Sung Dynasty, and was enshrined after her death.
