Humans habitation started about 8,000 years ago. It was populated with mostly Native Americans. In 1909 president William Howard Taft named the area a National Monument. In 1918, however the acting director of the newly created National Park Service changed the parks name to Zion.
The parks unique geography and variety of life zones allow for unusual animal diversity. There are 289 species of bird, 75 mammals, and 32 types of reptile.
Differing soil types and uneven water availability, provides diverse habitat for equally diverse mix of plants as animals. Sagebrush, prickly pear cactus, and rabbitbrush along with sacred datura and Indian paintbrush are common.
