The Zoot Suit became a popular subcultural look and minority style in the 1930's. It emerged among working-class Latin and African American youth in urban centers in the United States. The zoot suit came to national heights in 1943 during the Zoot Suit Riots. Violence broke out, and off duty service men in L.A. beat and stripped anyone wearing a zoot suit.
The zoot suit is made up of a long over sized jacket over padded shoulders, high waisted pants with wide legs that taper at the ankles. Limi Feu's 2009 collection is a perfect take on the zoot suit style.
Duckie Browns A/w 2014 collection is a fun a modern version of the look with a fitted plaid jacket and over sized shirt and pants. The zoot suit is an iconic garment that has been emulated by many designers.
