BIOMEDICAL DISEASE RESEARCH

TYRA BANKS

INFECTIOUS AGENT

  • The infectious agent for lyme disease -
  • Is a deer because the ticks are on them which
  • Produce the disease/illness also
  • Almost any other animal found in the woods that could
  • Possibly carry any of these ticks

~ LYME DIEASE ~

  • Symptoms :
  • Flu like symptoms -
  • Fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes ,headaches, fatigue, stiff neck
  • Signs and symptoms can occur within a month after you've been affected
  • Rash – which is a small and red ; bump may appear

BASIC TREATMENT FOR LYME DISEASE

  • Early stages = antibiotics
  • (such as doxycycline or annoxicillian)
  • Possible prolong antibiotics if serious side effects occur

LYME DISEASE TRANSMISSION

  • Transmitted through the bite of a specific type of tick known as "deer ticks "
  • And animals like deer, raccoons, opossums, etc.
  • Lyme disease is commonly found in New York, New Jersey, Maryland

PREVENTION FOR LYME DISEASE

  • lymerix vaccine
  • Wear long sleeves/tightly woven clothing outside
  • Tuck in shirts and walk in the Center of trials
  • Keep grass trimmed and apply tick repellent
  • Check for ticks while outside

HISTORY OF LYME DISEASE

  • First recognized in 1975, then went into investigation
  • when A large sum of children were being diagnosed with
  • Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in Lyme , Cann. And two near by towns
  • Later discovered that the children live near wooded areas likely to have ticks
  • Then said their symptoms were around tick season in the summer

MORE HISTORY OF LYME DIEASE

  • Next they said patients had a weird skin rash
  • Then said they can recall being bitten by a tick ; near the rash
  • After that Doctors said that deer ticks were likely to be infected with
  • Borrelia burgdorferi which live on deer
  • when the deer pop. Increased Repeat cases of this disease have been seen in the US

NEXT DISEASE ....

~MALARIA~

INTRO TO MALARIA

SYMPTOMS

  • Anemic ,fever , jaundice
  • sweating, vomiting
  • muscle pain, nausea

TREATMENT

  • Varies medication and antibiotics
  • Such as ... (Quinine , and doxycycline)
  • May also need to be hospitalized if it's a Really serious case

TRANSMISSION

  • Transmitted through mosquito bites
  • Malaria is a mosquito borne disease
  • Caused by parasitic pathogens
  • * Bite of an infected female mosquito

INFECTIOUS AGENT

  • Parasitic pathogens
  • * Female mosquito bite *

PREVENTION

  • Medication or even vaccines before going to foreign countries
  • Example : abxycline , cheouquine
  • Anti-marial meds.

HISTORY

  • Been around ever since 2700 BC described as an
  • Ancient disease the symptoms later on were described in
  • Nei Chang ; it is also said that this disease was around way before humans were alive
  • The prevention/treatment for the disease has been investigated for years but
  • Since no effective malaria vaccine has been developed it still remains as a big health risk

ANOTHER DIEASE

INTRO TO TUBERCULOSIS

INFECTIOUS AGENT OF TUBERCULOSIS

  • Agent = mycobacterium
  • Tuberculosis(Mtb) - rod shaped bacteria
  • Bacterium a.k.a Roch's postulates

~SYMPTOMS FOR TUBERCULOSIS~

  • fever
  • weight loss
  • chest pain
  • wheezing, etc.

TREATMENT FOR TUBERCULOSIS

  • Medication such as...
  • Ex. Lamzid,rifampin,etc.
  • Other pills
  • Take meds. As directed.

HOW TUBERCULOSIS CAN BE TRANSMITTED

  • Around people with Tb, poor nutrition
  • Through contaminated air
  • Ex. Sneezing, speaking, or laughing
  • * Only people with active Tb can transmit it *

PREVENTION FOR TUBERCULOSIS

  • Some prevention is the tb vaccine that can protect you
  • Wear a face mask around people with tuberculosis

HISTORY OF TUBERCULOSIS

  • Genetic studies have shown that TB has been around for at least 15,000 years
  • evidence of TB in humans date back to 2400–3400 BC ; where even mummies
  • Have seen evidence of this disease in their spines ; Tb cases have decreased in yrs.
  • But is still one of the known infectious disease killers around the world ...
  • Scientist are still trying to make resistant med. for it and prevent it from occurring
