INTRODUCTION

  • In1930S,The U.S Public Health Service told 399
  • African American men that if they joined "Miss Rivers' Lodge"
  • for free, they would receive a lifetime of free physical examinations
  • at Tuskegee University. However, after an initial physical exam the men
  • were not told that they had syphilis.

  • For the forty years that this experiment ensued these men
  • were not treated and many died.

RACE: MYTH AND REALITY

  • As humans spread throughout the world, their adaptations to diverse climates
  • and other living conditions resulted in a profusion of complexions,
  • hair textures and colors, eye hues, and other physical variations.
  • Race- a group of people with inherited physical characteristics distinguish it from another group.
  • Myth about race: 1- the idea that any race is superior to others.

  • genocide- the attempt to destroy a group of people because of their presumed race or identity
  • Myth about race: 2- the idea that a "pure" race exists.
  • Biologists and anthropologists cannot decide how many races there are.

ETHNIC GROUPS

  • Ethnicity or ethnic- refers to cultural characteristics, more specifically, they
  • Refer to people who identify with one another on the basis of common
  • ancestry and cultural heritage.

MINORITY GROUPS AND DOMINANT GROUPS

  • Minority group- people who are singled out for unequal treatment
  • and who regard themselves as objects of collective discrimination.
  • Common conditions shared by minorities: their physical or cultural traits
  • are held in low esteem by the dominant group and they tend to marry
  • Within their own group.

  • Dominant group- those who discriminate among others because they have
  • the greater power, privileges, and social status.
  • A group becomes a minority in two ways:
  • One : thought expansion of political boundaries is when a group expands political
  • boundaries and minority groups are produced if it incorporates people with

  • Some people have a greater sense of ethnicity than others
  • Some people have firm boundaries between "us and them"
  • while others are vaguely aware of their ethnic origins.
  • If a group is relatively small and looks different than most
  • people in society and the object of discrimination is brought up they have a

  • heightened sense of ethnic identity.
  • In contrast, if you belong to the dominant group most
  • people in society feel no discrimination they have a low sense of ethnic identity.
  • Ethnicity: Is a way people construct their identity
  • Melting pot is a reference about the US in which many groups are blended into ethnic stew
