ANNEXATION OF HAWAII
1893

ABOUT..

  • Began on January 17, 1893
  • A group of American sugar planters wanted to overthrow the monarchy within Hawaii. American marine groups were sent over to protect American lives. The queen was forced to abdicate and the U.S soon settled in
  • This was important to U.S history because it allowed for Pearl Harbor to be established on the island, which later leads to an event that plays a vital role in American history.

Maine Explosion
1898

ABOUT...

  • A major explosion on board of the USS Maine battleship along Havana harbor. This tragedy kills 260 people
  • Spain was looked at for balms of explosion because the cause was determined as a mine.
  • This was important to U.S history because a declaration (Spanish-American War) of war was announced.

Spanish American War
1898

ABOUT...

  • The Spanish–American War was a conflict between Spain and the United States in 1898.
  • Issues began after the internal explosion of the USS Maine in Havana harbor.
  • This was important to U.S history because it ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americas and lead to the U.S. acquisition of territories in the western Pacific and Latin America.

Open door Policy
1899

ABOUT...

  • Open Door policy was a statement of principles initiated by the United States in 1899 and 1900 for the protection of equal privileges among countries trading with China and in support of Chinese territorial and administrative integrity.
  • It was issued by the Secretary of State name John Hay.
  • It was important to U.S history because it was hoped that the Open Door Policy would help the U.S. economy grow while also decreasing the tension between the foreign powers already engaged in the Asian trade market.

Boxer Rebellion
1900

  • The Boxer Rebellion was caused by a society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fists that led an uprising in northern China against the spread of Western and Japanese influence there.
  • It was important to U.S history because it brought China to a higher position in the eyes of the rest of the world. Their importance was clearly stated when it came to the economy's of the everyone around them.

Foraker Act
1900

ABOUT...

  • Congress passed the Foraker Act, which established the governing structure for Puerto Rico. An American-appointed governor was to be the executive officer of the island and he was to be advised by a two-house legislature. The lower house was to be popularly elected, but the upper chamber was to be selected in the United States.
  • Citizens were conflicted with unhappiness. They knew this was better off than being ruled by Spain but they wanted control of their government.
  • This was beneficial for the United States because it allowed them to have a stake in the new territory and control it from the inside and the outside. But this created conflict within Puerto Rico and lead to the replacement of the Foraker Act with the Jone-Shafroth Act in 1917.

Platt Amendment
1901

ABOUT...

  • The platt amendment was an U.S. Army appropriations bill, which established the terms under which the United States would end its military occupation of Cuba.
  • The Platt Amendment laid down eight conditions which the Cuban Government had to agree before the withdrawal of U.S. forces and the transfer of sovereignty would begin.
  • This was important to U.S history because it established the U.S's role with Cuba. It defined its involvement and influence the U.S would have after their troops were removed.

Panamanian Rebellion
1903

  • With the support of the U.S. government, Panama issued a declaration of independence from Colombia.
  • This was important in U.S history because Panama's separation from Columbia allowed the United States to come and claim possession of the Panama Canal Zone which would open up trading with the Philippines and Guam.

Roosevelt Corollary
1904

ABOUT...

  • The Roosevelt Corollary was basically the reinforcement of the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine state that Europe could not expand into the Western Hemisphere. Roosevelt added to the document that any Latin American nation engage in "Chronic Wrongdoing," a phrase that included large debts or civil unrest, the United States military would intervene.
  • This was important to U.S history because it created a sea of anger for our Latin American neighbors. In result the United States would send troops of invasion to Latin America over 35 times

Russo-Japanese War
1904-1905

ABOUT...

  • The Russo-Japanese War was fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea.
  • After three major defeats, Russia was convinced that further resistance against Japan’s imperial designs for East Asia was hopeless, and in August 1905 U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt mediated a peace treaty at Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
  • This was important in U.S history because it allowed the States to be involved peacefully through Teddy Roosevelt, which he later earned a noble peace prize for his involvement

Gentleman's Agreement
1907-1908

ABOUT...

  • The Gentlemen’s Agreement between the United States and Japan in 1907-1908. It represented an effort by President Theodore Roosevelt to calm growing tension between the two countries over the immigration of Japanese workers.
  • Hostility was growing between Americans and the Japanese because of the treaty that was issues in 1894 stating that they could immigrate to the U.S freely. This resulted a large number of Japanese immigrants in California and it upset many Americans.
  • This was important to U.S history because the gentleman act was created to maintain good relations with Japan and to counter Russia's expansion.

Great White Fleet
1907-1909

ABOUT...

  • The Great White Fleet was a nickname for the United States Navy battle fleet that completed a circumnavigation of the globe from December 16, 1907, to February 22, 1909, under the order of United States President Theodore Roosevelt.
  • The fleet consisted of 16 battles ships that were divided into two squadrons and several escorts.
  • It was important to U.S history not in the sense of accomplishment but more because it showed the rest of the world that the United States weren't a country to be messed with at sea or by land.

The Square Deal
1910

ABOUT...

  • The Square Deal was a part of President Theodore Roosevelt's domestic program that was formed upon three basic ideas: conservation of natural resources, control of corporations, and consumer protection.
  • This was important to U.S history because it was used to break up large monopolies and benefit both business and labor.

Completion of the Panama Canal
1914
