OWLS ARE EXPERTS!

  • Owls feathers are soft and flexible,so they can sneak up on their prey
  • Owls hear in three dimensions (binaural hearing) making it easy to hear prey
  • They have 3 times as many rods in their eyes making it easy to hunt at night
  • Owls have 4 talons that make it easy to capture and hold prey
  • Their legs are completely covered in feathers protecting them from scratches/bites

Owls eyes are so big because they're packed with rods (which are light receptor cells) these rods give them excellent night vision

Owls have little room in their eyes, due to the fact they have so many rods, to store muscle. This means they aren't able to rotate their eyes, but to compensate for this they are able to rotate their heads almost all the way around their necks.

Since owls have few to no cones in their eyes they are not able to see in color.

Owl Ears
Feathers around the ears gather sound waves then direct them towards the eardrum. Owl's right and left hears are on slightly different levels of the head meaning they can catch sounds at different times.

Feathers protect an owls leg from scratches and bites from captured prey.

Owl's feathers are fluffy and fringed which reduces air disturbances, making their flying quiet.

It takes 3 weeks until an owlet can swallow prey whole.

Owl pellets are balls of fur, feather, and bones of previously digested prey that an owl coughs up.

Barn owls primarily eat small rodents, such as rats and mice.

Owls lay eggs every few days because it eases the feeding burden.

Owlets must leave the nest after a while to find new territory because they've depleted their parents food sources.

Barn owls can live up to 20 years, but this is rare in the wild.
