WHY DID COLONISTS WANT FREEDOM?
- England was taxing them without representation in parliament
- Soldiers were being quartered in their homes
- The British would not let them settle west of the Appalachians
On July 4, 1776 delegates officially declared independence.
The battles of Lexington and Concord were important because they started the war. Lexington was won by the British and Concord by the Americans.
The Battle of Bunker Hill proved that the American Army could fight bravely and the British would not be easy to defeat. The British won this battle.
The Battle of Saratoga was the turning point of the war and convinced the French to side with American forces. The Americans won the battle.
The Battle of Yorktown was the battle that ended the war and was won by the Americans.

- The American overall strategy was guerrilla warfare, which was surprise attacks.
- The British used their force and more traditional warfare.
