DAY 2-LONDON, ENGLAND

  • Big Ben is about 316 feet tall.
  • The Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire in 1834. In 1844, it was decided the new buildings for the Houses of Parliament should include a tower and a clock, Big Ben.
  • The nickname was applied first to the Great Bell; it may have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who oversaw the installation of the Great Bell,
  • The Palace of Westminster was the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. When the Place of Wesminster burned down the Big Ben was out in its place.
  • The Channel Tunnel is a 50.5-kilometre rail tunnel linking Folkestone, Kent, in the United Kingdom, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, near Calais in northern France, beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. The cost varies, if you can have a flexible time schedule. So if you go on a one way or switch channels. The more flexible you are the more it costs. It take a little over two hours. The Channel Tunnel, often called the Chunnel, is a railway tunnel that lies underneath the water of the English Channel and connects the island of Great Britain with mainland France. The Channel Tunnel, completed in 1994, is considered one of the most amazing engineering feats of the 20th century.

DAY 3-PARIS, FRANCE

  • The Eiffel Tower is 1050 feet tall.
  • The main reason for its design and construction was for the World Exhibition (also known as the Paris Exposition of 1889) commemerating the 100 year aniversery of the French Revolution in Europe.
  • Gustave Eiffel built the eiffel tower along with his company
  • 1,665 steps are needed to climb all the way to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

DAY 4-ROME, ITALY

  • The Colosseum was commissioned around A.D. 70-72 by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty as a gift to the Roman people. In A.D. 80, Vespasian’s son Titus opened the Colosseum–officially known as the Flavian Amphitheater–with 100 days of games, including gladiatorial combats and wild animal fights.
  • On the site of that Golden Palace, he decreed, would be built a new amphitheater where the public could enjoy gladiatorial combats and other forms of entertainment.
  • Decadent Roman emperor Nero made the colosseum.
  • It has about 80 entrances and can accommodate 50,000 spectators.

DAY 5-BERLIN, GERMANY

  • The Berlin wall between East and West Berlin was 11-13 feet high and stretched 28 miles. It also encircled the city of West Berlin and stretched approximately 100 miles.
  • The Berlin Wall evolved from a temporary border of barbed wire fencing to a heavily fortified, concrete barrier with numerous guards, tank traps and other obstacles.
  • 3-Over 100,000 people attempt to escape over the wall. Between 5,000 and 10,000 succeeded. Approximately 200 people were killed while trying to escape; many of them were shot by guards or had a fatal accident.
  • 4-Wires and mines were buried underneath the surface to prevent escape attempts; pipes on top of the wall prevented it from being scaled.
  • 5-Sections of the wall may be viewed at NATO Headquarters in Belgium, midtown Manhattan, and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

DAY 6- BLARNEY, IRELAND

  • The Blarney castle and stone are one of the most popular tourist sites in Ireland, attracting millions of visitors from around the world mwho wish to tour the castle and kiss the stone. According to legend, kissing the stone endows the kisser with the gift of gab, eloquence or skill at flattery.
  • The location of the Blarney Stone is in the village of Blarney about 5 miles (8 km) northwest of Cork, Ireland.
  • The Blarney Stone is a block of bluestone built into the battlements of Blarney Castle.
  • The name of the village Blarney is derived from the Irish word An blarna meaning 'the plain'.
  • The word blarney has come to mean clever, flattering, or coaxing talk.

DAY 7- BARCELONIA, SPAIN

  • The Casa Milà is one of the last buildings of the architect Antoni Gaudí, before he completely devoted it in the building of the Sagrada Familia. The Casa Milà is in the Eixample district and one of the best known and most impressive buildings in Barcelona.
  • The house itself consists of two houses, which are connected only by the facade, the ground floor and the roof. Each has its own courtyard and entrance.
  • The nickname "Quarry" was the Casa Milà, however, because of the unusual design.
  • Since 1984, the Casa Milà is a World Heritage by UNESCO.
  • Opened in December in 1910.
