The Roaring Twenties was a period of time in which the young men and women of America left the past culture with World War I. This huge piece of the population revolted against all societal norms and created a whole other culture. What most of the “new culture” revolved around: a new sound in music.

There was a sudden shift into a shared love for the musical arts between the post-war generations. The author of America’s Music History: The Jazz Age, describes the effects of the new invention that inspired this other culture. “The popularity of jazz rose as the music style brought an element of freedom back into people’s lives, glorifying city life,”(Kent State University 3).

The young men and women were rebelling from their parents’ ideas of appropriate behavior. Women began to wear less clothing, smoke, and drink excessively. Men and women began dancing exotically and new moves became famous. Women wore short dresses with numerous tassels; these girls were called flappers, just like their dresses.

Along with these rebellions and fashion statements, Jazz Music was born. Jazz has an undeniable tune you cannot ignore. The instruments make you want to tap or dance along to every song. Musicians would drop a solo out of the blue, that was part of the “go for it” theory for the 1920s.

The main idea of Jazz, was to enjoy the moment. Tunes would range from relaxing to swing, and it was all about creativity. The style is based mostly on improvising and being adventurous with the sounds that you want to create. This musical style was the soundtrack for the optimism and golden time period of the Roaring Twenties.

The Jazz Age gave America many new stars as well. Louis Armstrong for example, i bet almost everyone would recognize his name. Armstrong was extremely talented with his deep, undeniable singing voice, and his skills in improvisation on the trumpet. This artist began in New Orleans and has now inspired music around the globe. Probably his most famous work, What A Wonderful World.

“The First Lady of Song,” Ella Fitzgerald was only 13 years old when she became probably the most famous female Jazz artist. Throughout her career, she had managed to sell over 40 million albums and win 13 Grammy Awards. She was talented in many ways, but her style was a huge inspiration to all music genres.

The Jazz era may have ended quickly due to the Great Depression, but the music has lived on despite opposition. Many felt that it was not serious enough, like classical music, to be considered a form of art rather than entertainment. The genre continued to draw in one generation after another and it lived on through the many that could not shake the feeling of inspiration it gave them.

Even with other music genres coming and going, Jazz has been a constant, in both entertainment and inspiration. Many artists owe their love of music to people like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Like the article I read, I will close with this quote: “Jazz education today teaches not just a musical style, but the cultural history of a nation,”(Kent State University 18).
