AFRICAN GEOGRAPHY

ATLAS MOUNTAINS

• It extends about 2500 km across northwest Africa
• The highest peak is approx. 4167 meter high
• Home of unique animals to Africa, both extinct and still alive
• There are deposits of iron, lead, copper silver and mercury

LAKE VICTORIA

• Named after queen Victoria
• Has a surface area of 68,800 sq. km
• Worlds second largest fresh water lake
• Deepest point is about 84 meters deep with an average of 40 meters

HORN OF AFRICA

• Covers approx. 2,000,000 sq. km
• Home to about 100,000,000 people
• Peninsula that juts into the Arabian Sea
• Some of the hottest temperatures in the world (on coast year round average 96 F)

NILE RIVER

• Longest river in world-6,853 km
• Flows north
• Has two major tributaries-Blue and White Nile
• Has artificial lake on flowing path-Lake Nasser

GULF OF ADEN

• Between Yemen and Somalia
• Average depth of 500 km
• It's deepest point is 2700 km deep
• Known as "Pirate Alley" due to it high piracy activity

CANARY ISLANDS

• Spanish archipelago 100 km from African coast
• Has total land area of 7493 sq. km
• Very moderate climate, much like that of San Diego
• Varies whether it is wet or dry because of the trade winds

KALAHARI DESERT

• Extends 900,000 sq. km
• Semi-desert, great for grazing after rainfall
• The driest area was average between 6-9 inches of rain a year
• Daily temperatures reach up to 113 degrees F

MT. KENYA

• Second highest mountain in Africa
• Highest peak of 5199 km
• It's a stratovolcano created 3,000,000 years ago
• There are currently 11 glaciers still in the mountains
