FORMING AN IDENTITY

  • Adolescents try out different selves
  • most young people do develope a sense of contentment in their lives
  • 80% said they would choose their life the way it is now
  • 20% said they wish they were someone else
  • 28% said they wonder why they exist

Parental and Peer Influence

  • Since people want to be individuals, they start to separate themselves from their parents.
  • Positive relations with parents support positive relations with peers
  • Teens who feel close to their parents tend to be happier overall
  • When rejected adolescents withdraw, they can be lonely and have low self-esteem
  • Parents have more influence in shaping teens religious faith

SELF CONCEPT

  • Self concept- a sense of one's identity and personal worth
  • Mirror images fascinate infants from the age of about 6 months
  • Only about 18 months does the child recognize that it's themself
  • Authoritarian parents impose rules and expect obedience
  • Permissive parents submit to their children's desires make few demands

  • Authoritative parents are both demanding and responsive
  • Children with high self esteem, self reliance and social competence usually have warm, authoritative parents
  • Authoritarian- less social skill and low self esteem
  • Authoritarian- less social skill and low self esteem
  • Permissive- aggressive and immiture
