Before You Read "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" by Flannery O'Connor p. 1010

1. What is the relationship between place and Literature?

Flannery O'Connor depicts the setting and its influence on the characters.

2. Literary Analysis:
Grotesque Character

Grotesque means very ugly, but in literature it means strange or odd.

Grotesque traits may be expressed in a character's physical appearance. They may be hidden, visible only in a character's actions and emotions.

How to figure out whether a character is grotesque?

Look for details
through characterisation:
1. direct
2. indirect

3. Reading Strategy:
Character
[physical appearance, words, thoughts, actions, what others say, how others react]
Conclusion

e.g. "The daughter jumped up and began to stamp and point and make excited speechless sounds."

To reach a conclusion about the character who stamped, I look for more descriptions of her.
