Poe was born on January 19th, 1809 in Boston, MA

His mother was the actress Eliza Poe

Poe's mother died when he was 3

Poe's foster parents were tobacco farmers John and Francis Allan

In 1815, Poe went to Stoke-Newington boarding school

Poe attended the University of Virginia

He left university because of fights with his father and his gambling debt

Tamerlane and Other Poems became his first published work in 1827

Poe was court-martialed from West Point in 1831

Poe married his 13 year old cousin Virginia in 1836

He moved to New York in 1837

In New York, he was unable to find a job

His detective story, Murders in the Rue Morgue, was published in 1841

The Raven was published in 1845

Poe's wife Virginia died in 1847

In 1848, he became engaged to Nancy Richmond

A year later, he became engaged to Sarah Elmina Roysten Shelton

Poe died on October 7, 1849
